Dear Friends,

As we watch events around the world we realise that they are increasingly global in their impact and relevance. Human events are being recognised as reflecting planetary causes - thus opening the door to the recognition of the one planetary life working out into active forms. In our own South Pacific region we find the current power crises in Fiji and the Solomon Islands, whilst location specific, yet involve us all either as participants or observers. Whatever our involvement we are changed by the experience, however subtly. Our understanding of the government of multicultural nations is being clarified. The interplay of individual wills, of the wills of ethnic groups and of racial wills is clarifying their place within human will and planetary will.

Around the world many people representing "minority" interests are exercising their right to self-determination against either the power of a majority rule or against the force of powerful ruling parties. It is as though the world, having come to some degree of balance and accord between its "majorities" (in either size or power) is now ready to expand its identity to include all groups in their interdependent place within the whole. Although different countries and nations operate under different political and administrative institutions and regimes, there are cross-currents of human expectation and response that cannot long be delayed by institutional or geographical borders. The will of all individuals and groups is determined to express through our interrelated world. Even apparent enemies become trading partners and all nations are becoming composites of racial, ethnic and religious groups.

It is true that the lingering sense of exclusivity is what initiates many of these moves to self-determination. We have seen groups fight for their rights only to apply their own form of oppression and intolerance, becoming absorbed in the very attitudes they had previously resisted. Some of this terrible backlash has been seen in certain African nations, Afghanistan and other countries emerging from Soviet rule, as well as in the ongoing course or re-relationship in Ireland, Palestine, Lebanon and others. They are undergoing a shift, not from one rule to another, but a shift in process that accords to all individuals and groups an equivalent place within the whole.

On the surface it is as though separate and isolated individual wills are warring with one another. But from a global perspective, through the dimensions of being and time, we can see the planetary life unfolding as a whole. Just as everything in and upon the planet is permeated (and animated) with life - and participates in the planetary life - so it is permeated with the purpose of that life as it expresses through the planet.

The planetary plan is reflected in everything - in all our apparently separate lives and circumstances. It floods our being. We can accommodate that energy of purpose and turn it towards our own selfish and separative ends but unless they contribute something towards the life of the world our efforts will be momentary at best and will be swept away in the infinite and eternal flow of life.

Planetary purpose is reflected in the little plans of men. Planetary will animates planetary purpose and is reflected in the little wills of men as they plan and work out their own purposes. They are learning through trial, error and increased understanding that their wills and God's Will are one and that their lives are indivisible from the One Life which pervades all. Any lack of understanding is temporal - temporary within unfolding time. Christ told us "If any man shall do His will, he shall know." It is through experiment and experience - through doing - that we learn. We are told that "the disciple knows because he works" and that he "must become that which it is his destiny to reveal". Further clues lie in this quotation from an Old Commentary:

" He stands in strength who sees the Will of God behind the Plan. The will-to-good substands all true goodwill. That will is he.
The Plan for this cycle of the sixth objective crisis is goodwill for all men, and through all men, goodwill. That Plan starts now.
. . . The objective of the Plan is to reproduce upon the plane of earth the inner kingdom of the soul. This has the Master of the Masters long foretold. Prepare the Way."

As the inner intention eventually externalises into active form, so the Kingdom of God will eventually re-appear on earth. At this moment in the life of our planet the human heart and mind are poised and ready to identify with that which is greater, more beneficent, more all-encompassing, more powerful than any individual and which is ultimately more merciful and meaningful than any individual life on its own. We are becoming aware of that "life more abundantly" of which Christ spoke and which is invigorating human affairs around the globe. The Tibetan Master tells us of "the Will of Christ, immanent in every form, and peculiarly active in the form of humanity, and therefore capable of joyous and understanding use" and elsewhere of "the energy which is now streaming forth - the energy of Love in its dynamic or electric form. It is the Will aspect of Love which the Christ will of necessity use this time when He comes; when He earlier came He employed the teaching aspect . . and not the Will aspect."

The birth of new life into form can bring pain to our material side as old forms are changed or discarded to make way. Yet we are told of a great Law of Compensation which "comes into play in a peculiar manner and along certain lines where . . disciples are concerned. The emphasis laid upon discipline, upon purification, upon hard demanding work and upon relinquishing that which the personality holds dear, is a needed phase of . . development. This is generally and often sadly recognised. But - paralleling the period of pain and difficulty - is a compensatory activity of the soul which brings all life and circumstance into true perspective and changes attitudes so completely that the recognition of adequate reward supersedes the realisation of pain."

This is the compensation of those who prepare the way, of those who can "walk humbly with their God". We are told that "This . . is one of the most advanced injunctions in any of the world Scriptures and is found in The Bible. It has no reference to humility as usually interpreted and understood. It signifies the ability to view all life with a sense of divine proportion and from the angle of spiritual mathematics, and . . with no sense of dualism. . . It involves acceptance and comprehension of purpose, and this in such a manner that the consecrated personality . . . in cooperation with the one known God - walks the ways of Earth as a channel for the three divine qualities (love, will and intelligence), but also as a channel for that which these qualities will enable him later to sense, know and reveal. . . These are solemn and important statements. They have within them the element of prophecy . . . Something lies behind the three divine aspects of so great an importance, beauty and revelatory strength that all the happenings of all time, up to the present emerging Aquarian Age, have been only the initial and initiatory preparation."
