No 204/December 2003

Dear Friends,
We are part of such an incredibly beautiful world. Even the least inspiring concrete buildings take on a transcendent beauty when gilded by the embrace of the setting sun or when washed with the dawn of a new day. At these moments, no matter how plain the form, the energy that we experience as beauty still pervades and permeates the field of our experience. Such are the subtle realities in which we are immersed and which sustain our life and living. For the "one in Whom we live and move and have our being" is bathed in a sea of energies that wash in and through us despite what we do on the material surface of His physical Being.

Yet we ourselves are part of - and in essence are - that great Being which is our planetary life. If we are in conflict with one another or with ourselves that Life lacks its potential coherence and integration and suffers dis-ease. Still the resilience of the system is such that even world wars have not stopped the "bursting forth" of the inner life into expression. Poppies flower on the battlefields of Flanders and we are told that the bombing in London unearthed seeds of ancient flowers which bathed the ruins in a beauty not seen before.

With all our man-made capacity for creation and destruction we still draw on the very substance of our planet and adhere to the principles and laws that govern its existence in all dimensions of its Being. We are told by the Tibetan Master, Djwhal Khul, "to sum it all up - participation, consciousness and cooperation in the thinking and planning of the planetary Logos." And our capacities drive us ever onward: "Area after area of the Body of Him 'in Whom we live and move and have our being' is steadily revealed to the advancing initiate until some day he will know, even as he is known."

This progress, this self-initiated evolution, is part of what drives the progress of the whole planetary life. It moves as a whole because it is a whole. We cannot help but move because of it, as it cannot help move because of us. Like the old "chicken and egg" conundrum, it is not a question of which came first or which is the directing agent - we are all part of the direction. Our every act, feeling, thought, and inspiration is part of what drives the planetary life itself. Our living world is entirely mutual. Whether we actively realise this or not we still share in the planetary life. The difference is in the degree to which we participate in conscious sharing of the life and become an active and co-ordinated agent of the whole rather than a rogue element focussed only on gathering material substance to oneself.

The point at which our consciousness expands into the shared life of the whole is a powerful moment for the individual and the world as a whole. This point of new realisation reveals the nature of the integral relationship of the part to the whole - new laws govern the consciousness of the individual who now vibrates in a new and different way in the body of Him "in Whom we live and move and have our being". As he no longer directs energies exclusively to himself they flow through him in service to the world. He becomes "radioactive and magnetic" and draws energy not just in and through himself but through the currents of the Whole Life of which he is now a conscious, participating part. We are told that:

" the expression of the creative faculty is radiation and magnetism. This brings to its possessor the material for creation and a magnetic capacity which arranges in due form and beauty that which radiation has evoked. Creativity is a consequence of a particular state of mind and a specific state of being; it signifies a point in evolution when the disciple is definitely radioactive. He can no more help creating in some form or another than he can help living."

At this point he begins to resonate to that to which the Planetary Life responds. Then the "part becomes the whole", in consciousness, and lives out the synthesis of the whole. Even higher laws begin to operate - yet in all the dimensions of the individual's living the laws respective to each operate in their dimension and domain without need of his conscious attention. His attention is now absorbed in the synthesis of the One Life working out through all as the shared breath whose inspiration enlivens everything.

In the world, economic sharing is becoming a realised reality. Share markets move up and down with global impact - inspired by individual events or national economies and the perceived implications these have according to shareholders around the world. An event occurs in one part of the world, whether sudden catastrophe or new discovery, and the reactive ripples are applied through the activities of shareholders as they move to buy or sell. They are shareholders sharing in the global economy no matter what company name appears on the share certificates.

Similarly the political policies and attitudes of any one government affect all other governments in varying degrees. Each has a unique part to play both in its own nation's life and in the world as a whole. The world as a total system then in turn affects every nation within it. Religious organisations also ebb and flow with the ripples that move through all the different denominations and faiths. The one divine inspiration breathes through them all and new realisations from any one affect all others - the same inspiration and progressing realisation expresses through their diversity.

Thus Life plays out in the theatre of our shared daily living but is constantly progressive in realisation. This brings a new sense of proportion. The arrogance of a human "authority" is irrelevant. There is always more than even the greatest amongst us know at a point in time - even though, as part of the whole, that knowing is within our grasp and ever unfolding. We move as a whole so competition is no longer relevant to one whose consciousness is immersed in the whole. We have created wonders and will create greater ones as realisation grows. As we cannot help but become more and more creative so we participate in greater and greater expressions of the divine. The Tibetan explains that:

"The Mysteries will restore colour and music as they essentially are to the world and do it in such a manner that the creative art of today will be to this new creative art what a child's building of wooden blocks is to a great cathedral such as Durham or Milan. The Mysteries, when restored, will make real - in a sense incomprehensible to you at present - the nature of religion, the purpose of science and the goal of education. These are not what you think today."

To look myopically backwards at the past distorts as it misses the goal towards which we move and are moved. The promise of a spiritual future and completed point of view was brought to us 2,000 years ago with the appearance of the Christ on earth. Let us rejoice at this special time of year in the opening up of the Way for us all to become the Whole. An Old Commentary predicts:

"That which is a mystery will no longer be so, and that which has been veiled will now be revealed; that which has been withdrawn will emerge into the light, and all men shall see and together they shall rejoice. That time will come when desolation has wrought its beneficent work, when all things have been destroyed, and men, through suffering, have sought to be impressed by that which they had discarded in vain pursuit of that which was near at hand and easy of attainment. Possessed, it proved to be an agency of death - yet men sought life, not death."
